Its A Big World Out There.  Don’t Let Fear Of Bedbugs Stop You From Seeing Loved Ones, Visiting Incredible Places, and Keeping Your Home Safe When You Return.

Bedbugs While Traveling

Inspecting a room with anything less than a full infestation is difficult but is still the first response. Hotel staff are usually quick to respond to complaints and will have established protocols to address the problem as best as they can. As such, don’t expect to pull back the covers and colonies or the tell-tale signs of blood stains or droppings.

In reality, the eggs are incredibly small and nymphs are light colored and around 1/16 of an inch (or 1.5 millimeters).  If you suspsect bedbugs, some common ways to protect yourself include:

  • Leaving luggage in the car or room bath tub.
  • Use luggage racks to keep items off the floor after close inspection
  • Avoid leaving items on the bed – especially at night.
  • Do not store clothes in the dresser drawers.
  • Inform hotel staff immediately if you spot a bedbug.

If you suspect bedbugs, the immediate goal is to minimize the spread.

How Do Bedbugs Spread?

Bedbugs wait until nightfall, feed on human blood, and then seek a quiet spot to hide away.  Hiding spots include any personal items near the bed such as a book, luggage, sleeping attire, or an article of clothing.

These items are usually packed into the suitcase where the bug can move freely to hide in seams and crevasses.  To make matters worse… Because of the aggressive mating habits, an egg laying female is more likely to seek shelter away from the colony. Heat has an advantage as it penetrates into hiding spots to eliminate eggs and bugs wherever they are.

If you find a bedbug or wake up with bites while traveling…

Sleeping in a room that has bedbugs can ruin a trip and create significant anxiety while traveling. The immediate goal is to minimize the spread.

While on the road there are a few steps that you can take to prevent bringing bedbugs home. A first step is to transport items in sealed plastic bags. If you can launder items in a hot commercial dryer prior to retuning home, great, otherwise carefully unpack and place clothes directly into a washing machine upon returning home. Inspect your suitcase along the seams and zipper areas. Items that can’t be heat treated, such as medicines, should be wiped down and inspection.
