Bed Bug Trend: Firehouses Battle Flames and Bed Bugs

A recent article on FireEngineering.com reported bed bugs are now a concern for firefighters. Fire Chief Larry Lamb, of Niles, Ind., explained that his department is taking a proactive approach to bed bugs. The University of Nebraska –Lincoln has now treated 94 rooms for bed bugs. So far, 1,300 of the 3,256 dorm rooms have been checked, and 7 percent of the rooms have come up positive for the pests. Reports of bed bugs in college dorms seem to have increased recently. Chadron State College and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln are among the most recent. The University of Nebraska-Lincoln alone reported a total of 54 dorm rooms with bed bug infestations. University of Nebraska-Lincoln Update

Since January, the University of Nebraska- Lincoln has been battling bed bugs after students returned to dorms from winter break. Bed bug- sniffing dogs have found the bugs in 43 rooms on campus, a number smaller than anticipated by university personnel. The university currently has two dogs on campus going through various rooms in residence halls.
